This year is drawing to an end, and it’s about time to look back at the year gone by and also plan for the future and make new plans!
I started this blog back in June, and my first accent learning mission was the general American accent.
I was mimicking American English speakers, I was doing a lot of self-practice, and by the end of September I announced the General American Pronunciation mission accomplished. There are quite a few things I still have to improve upon when it comes to my ability to sound like an American coming from Midwest region. By and large, however, I learned all the basics and I was quite happy with my progress on the American mission!
Next mission I took on this year is the British accent or the so-called Received Pronunciation.
Currently I’m in my third month of the mission, and I’m quite hopeful to finish it off early next year, so that I can start revisiting my American pronunciation and also plan the next accent learning missions.
And here are my plans in terms of my accent learning and improvement for the year 2013:
1. First of all, I have to improve certain aspects of my General American Pronunciation.
While my overall American accent is quite good, there are little things I’ve got to work on and also I have to improve the overall sound of my American, so I’ll spend a few weeks working on that.
Also, during this time I’m going to try to have a conversation with an American person and I’ll try to record a video of it and publish it on this blog so that you can see how well I’m capable of sounding American when speaking with a real American speaker.
2. Secondly, I’ll revisit my Received Pronunciation for a few more weeks!
I’m committing to the same goals – having a live conversation with a British person in order to solidify my British accent learning gains, and to see how I stack up against a native speaker in a real life conversation!
3. Next up, I’m planning to take on three new accents next year!
It’s going to be exciting, and one thing I can tell you for sure is that the first new accent mission is going to be Irish! I can’t wait to get started on it because I live in Ireland and I really love the local accent!
As for the other 2 missions – I’m not 100% sure as of yet, so it remains to be seen what new accents I’m going to learn. I’ll actually put it up for voting here on my blog so that you guys can decide which 2 accents you want me to learn next year apart from Irish!
That’s what I’m planning to do next year, and I hope you’ll enjoy following my accent adventures! I also hope you’ll learn a thing or two for yourselves, and it would be simply amazing if we together could start a real movement where its followers are learning accents quickly and easily by getting rid of this bias that in order to learn an accent you’ve got to be a professional voice artist or a genius!
I strongly believe anyone can learn to speak with a specific English accent in a few weeks’ time provided that you’re engaging in a lot of spoken practice, and that’s exactly what you can see me doing on my blog!
I wish you a really Happy and Successful New Year, and let’s stay together throughout the year 2013!
Best Regards,
Robby 😉
